Young Chick
Group Resurrection of Phoenixes
General
Phoenixes are beautiful, almost celestial creatures. They resemble an eagle with some characteristics of a swan, with sleak but powerful bodies, slightly slender necks, hooked beaks, and thick talons, as well as some longer, peacock-like plumes sprouting from their heads and extending down their backs. Standing at a range of three to four feet tall with a wingspan of up to ten feet in length, these raptors are constantly aflame, burning dark with beautiful swirls of colors and small twinkles of light mixed in resembling galaxies from afar. On the rare occasion that the Phoenix is not on fire, typically while mating or gravely injured, their feathers range from navies, dark purples, dark browns, to black. Their fiery colors shift and change with the movement of the flames, and while any gender and rank can be a combination of any color, they will likely remain that set of colors for their lifespans. While Phoenixes are not particularly magical creatures, their flames are clearly imbued with some degree of magic, as they are able to burn hot enough to be dangerous at will.
Phoenixes in the wild are solitary nocturnal predators. While they generally lose the element of surprise with their appearance, they are incredibly fast and skilled hunters with incredible vision, both during the day and at night. Even when bonded, it is not uncommon for Phoenixes to disappear days at a time. They are however, able to develop connections with other phoenixes bonded to the same being and take on a more group-oriented lifestyle.
When a Phoenix grows old, gravely injured, emotionally devastated or traumatized, they will die, and rise again from their ashes. The death of a Phoenix resembles the death of a star, which determines their rank. Normally a quiet and unassuming affair, rarer ranks' deaths are larger and can be dangerous if not kept in check. Most Phoenixes will be able to get to safety for their rebirth, but some may not make it. No matter what manner of death occurs, there will always be a pile of ashes (often as if by magic), from which a Phoenix chick will emerge. Many Phoenixes will lose some or all of their memories upon death. While most will be able to regain all of those memories over a short period of time, sometimes there are glitches in the system and memories may be loss, especially when the cause of death is traumatic. Connections and abilities will almost always remain, however.
While they are unable to mindspeak, Phoenixes are highly intelligent creatures and are able to send images to their bonded, often using incredibly detailed visuals that will sometimes move as the communication continues. They are highly in tune with their bonded’s emotions, and have a strong sense of their surroundings.
Chase Info
A phoenix chase is a fairly straightforward affair. Frequently happening on New Moons, when the sky is at its darkest, a female will rise, burning more brightly than she normally does, signalling to males that she is ready to chase. While it is typically the male who is able to catch her who wins, oftentimes males will get aggressive with one another, leading some females to choose a mate for other reasons. Once a mate is selected, both phoenixes will extinguish their flames. While Phoenixes don’t necessarily mate for life many females are likely to choose the same male repeatedly, and while some will continue to make him chase her, others will simply find him when they are ready.
Bonding Info
Both mother and father, who can be any rank, watch over the clutch of eggs until the chicks are ready to be independent. While a chick will hatch from its egg in a burst of flame, they are grey, downy, and unable to fly or catch fire for at least ten weeks. While most parents will wait until their chicks are ready to fly before they bond, some will even have a gathering for a hatching, leaving the humanoid to bond and care for a helpless chick.
Phoenixes do not require much to bond. Bringing some meat will definitely catch some of their attention, but otherwise tastes and desires vary by individual.
Ranks
Black Hole
The rarest and undoubtedly most dangerous manner in which a Phoenix dies, Black Holes create an enormous source of gravity, pulling all sorts of matter towards it in at least a twenty foot radius. While the pull is not so intensely strong that it cannot be avoided, any item that is sucked into the black hole will disappear. Most Black Holes will fly into a distant place in an effort to minimize damage, but if caught off guard, their deaths can be quite devastating. The black holes commonly last a few hours.
3PSP
Supernova
Perhaps the flashiest of deaths, when a Supernova dies, they emit an intensely bright light, and a mild explosion, probably about thirty foot radius. Many fly extremely high into the sky, creating brilliant shows in the air, and a pile of ashes will commonly appear on the ground directly beneath where the explosion occurs.
2PSP
Pulsar
The death of a Pulsar is the longest lasting death, sometimes lingering for up to a day. The Phoenix will fade into a dull white color, emitting a strong pulse of bright light occasionally at a rate that varies from Phoenix to Phoenix, until all light is lost.
2PSP
Radiant
The fastest death of any of the ranks, a Radiant Phoenix will emit an intensely bright light, similar to the Supernova rank, sans the explosion. The light will last a few seconds, leaving behind the pile of ash immediately after.
1PSP
Collapse
A Collapse Phoenix dies from the inside out, with its whole body crumbling into ash before collecting into neat pile for a chick to emerge from. It is perhaps the most difficult death to watch, as a majority of the Phoenix's body will remain whole until the very end.
1PSP
Fade
A Fade Phoenix will seem to lose its solidness, continuing to move and fly around while becoming less and less opaque until it becomes a shadow of itself. Eventually this shadow will swirl to the ground, leaving a pile of ash.
1PSP
Cool
A Cool Phoenix's flames will slowly die down, leaving the Phoenix's body bare and cold to the touch, until it freezes over completely, breaking up into pieces before becoming ash.
