Hunting the Perfect Present

Tinker contemplated the blindfold. It was a diaphanous strip of fabric, allowing some light through but blocking enough to make Ophyra comfortable in daylight. The fact that it also blurred objects was a problem, and Tinker really wanted to find a way to give her witch friend, who had been so kind to welcome the cats into her home, a better solution.  How could she dim the cruel sunlight without impeding the elf's sight?  The tabby went on with her day, pondering this idea as she tended her egg and played with her growing family.

The solution came with a vague memory from the first bonding the cats attended.  The strange priest had worn some kind of covering over his eyes on that bright day, she thought, and she had seen him wearing them on other days where the sun was out, but not on those occasions where they crossed paths at night.  Could they also be an object used to darken the sun?

Infused with a sense of impending victory, Tinker set out to find @padre and quiz him on what, exactly, the dark covering he wore was, how it worked, and where she might get one for Ophyra.  For once, she was even going out on her own; the other cats were napping, and their growing family of shinies had tasks of their own.  So it was that the orange tabby made her way to the church, nosing around for sign of the Father. Hello?  Priest, are you home?

It was, inconveniently for him and conveniently for everyone else, not hard to find the priest. The church, after all, seemed to grow larger by the minute every time someone new found themselves making the weyrd their new home. It had become some kind of marker for the weyrd or something. And with the holidays coming up, the priest wasn't afforded much time to leave these days.

Today was no different. Clarence was really going to have to invest in a Whazzit liturgical calendar if that was even a thing that existed, because there was no way he was going to get blindsided by the holidays like this again.

"Coming, coming," the priest called out to whoever it was that was summoning him. He'd been trying to get some cleaning done in the rectory, what with all the random things that had been cropping up, until a group of carolers had stopped by the church proper and were harassing everyone. Balancing a large egg in one arm and shooing out the carolers with the other, he whirled around was was surprised to see a cat at his feet. A normal looking cat. Probably the first normal looking animal he'd seen since getting here.

He was immediately suspicious.

"Hello?"

Tinker watched as Clarence chased out the carolers, darting out of the way of the exodus, then sat at the Father's feet, coiling her tail over her front paws as she looked up at him, amber eyes bright and clear. She meowed briefly, almost a chirrup, then, Hello, Priest, she replied cheerfully, a soft rumbling purr starting up.  She did that a lot, the purring.  Making note of the egg in his arms, she brightened even more, if such a thing can be imagined. Oh, you have an egg too! It looks about the same size as mine, but yours has different colors. I wonder if they have the same things inside? Ah, yes, distractable cat is distractable.  She'll remember why she's here, eventually.

The priest narrowed his eyes at the little orange cat. It wasn't that he disliked cats. It was that he was extremely suspicious of something that was, for all intents and purposes, normal. Tinker was normal colored and normal sized. Normal sized was a pretty big thing here, considering EVERYTHING ELSE WAS GIANT. Just look at the egg in his arms. There was no way that was going to fit in one of those little dozen egg cartons that he could shove in his fridge. No, it was GIANT.

Honestly, Clarence found it much more concerning that he had to look down at the cat when she was talking to him rather than the fact that she was talking to him. In his mind. Ok, that was pretty weird, he guessed. But again, not the weirdest part of any of this. Also not the weirdest was the fact that someone had delivered a giant mystery egg to a cat. That seemed pretty normal in these parts.

"Hello cat," he replied, much friendlier sounded than his face seemed to let on, "You say you have one too? What color is yours?" As if knowing the color of the cat's egg would suddenly reveal to him the answer of the great egg mystery. Sigh. Distractible priest was also distractible.

Tinker was 100% ordinary cat.  Didn't you know all cats are telepathic, Clarence?  That's absolutely normal, too.  Just because they choose to not talk to humans didn't mean they lacked the skill.  Honestly, people these days. 

I do, Tinker agreed promptly, rising up from her tidy seat and using her front paws to ever so daintily stretch up and brace against the priest's knee while peering at the egg, trying to get a closer look.  Unlike her lumbering disaster of a younger brother, Tinker had a light and delicate touch when she interacted with others.  Politely, she kept her claws sheathed, not even dimpling the fabric of his pant leg as she craned her head this way and that, every inch the normal cat curious about something a human held - and the pose was, appropriately, paired with a soft mrring meow of inquisitiveness.

My egg looks like Oeztesk, she confided. White, until the light hits it.  Then it is many colors, and is very shiny.  I like it. A pause, then, Can I sniff yours?  I want to know if they smell the same. That's right, human, bring the pretty egg down for the kitty to inspect.  It's rude to keep it up there out of her easy reach.
