Singular: Pegasus
Plural: Pegasi
Group: Herd of Pegasi
General Info
Pegasi are creatures straight out of Terran legend: horses with the wings of birds, easily capable of bearing a rider in flight. They come in every color and pattern imaginable, from plain bays and blacks all the way to rainbow zebra stripes and neon leopard spotting. Their wings are equally variable, running the gamut from drab greys to tie-dye. Further adding to the species' variability, Pegasi come in a staggering array of sizes. While the average Pegasus measures between 14 and 17 hands at the withers, exceptional individuals have stood as small as 8 hands or as large as 20 hands.
Each and every Pegasus is born with clouds streaming from their fetlocks. These clouds are an innate part of a Pegasus’ body, a physical manifestation of the same inherent magic that allows them to fly. A Pegasus’ cloud type indicates its rank, with rarer ranks boasting rarer clouds. Each cloud type is further associated with broad personality archetypes, though this is more of a guideline than a hard-and-fast rule. All ranks are dual-gendered; any rank can be of any physical sex or gender identity.
A deceptively intelligent species, Pegasi are capable of fluent mindspeech and a limited degree of emotional projection. They have no specific naming conventions and readily accept names from any source.
Mating Info
Pegasi chases are generally uncomplicated affairs. Mares trumpet to announce their readiness before launching skyward with stallions in hot pursuit. The male who most impresses the chasing female, whether by virtue of speed, strength, agility, or temperament, will go on to sire her foals.
Roughly eleven months after a successful chase, a mare will give birth to 1-4 foals. Herdmates often foal around the same time and raise their offspring communally.
Bonding Info
Pegasi foals are ready to bond as soon as they are weaned, a process that takes place around the six month mark. Bonding itself is simple: hopefuls need merely interact with the foals and wait. Some will be attracted to conversation partners, others to offerings of food, still others to those whose personalities clash or harmonize. Pegasi need not bond as youngsters; adults can and do form bonds as easily as weanlings.
Ranks
Noctilucent
While Noctilucents are born as often as any other rank, only a fraction of their number choose to accept a bond. These shy, often flighty Pegasi prize their independence above all else, and will defend it with a ferocity that’s awesome to behold. Ice crystals drift from their legs, striking vivid rainbows whenever they catch the light.

Nimbostratus
Nimbostratus Pegasi are best known for their famously short tempers and unpredictability. They tend towards extremes of emotion: when they’re happy, they’re great, but if they’re angry, head for the hills! Their clouds are heavy and black, sparking miniature thunderbolts when their owner is experiencing strong emotions.

Fog
The sneaks and pranksters of Pegasi-kind, Fogs have an uncanny knack for causing trouble. While rarely intentionally cruel, they tend towards a ‘leap before you look’ mentality that can make them unpopular with their herdmates. Thick, opaque mist clouds around their fetlocks, lingering in the air long after their creator has moved on.

Nimbus
Perhaps the kindest of Pegasi, Nimbuses care deeply about their herd- and bondmates. They want others to be happy and are more than willing to put in the hard work that requires. Be kind to these darlings: their empathy leaves them emotionally fragile and prone to burnout. Dreary grey clouds swirl around their hooves, often trailing rain or even snow in their wake.

Cumulus
Friendly and easy-going, Cumulus Pegasi are reliable helpers who love throwing their weight around. Just keep an eye on them if a task is time-sensitive; given half a chance they tend towards laziness. Puffy, fluffy white clouds gather around their lower legs, and yes, they’re just as soft as they look.

Stratus
Stratus Pegasi are the brains of this operation. They’re intelligent, clear-sighted creatures who excel at both the creation and execution of plans. Alas, their towering intellect can hamper them in social pursuits; they tend towards know-it-allism and sometimes struggle to emotionally connect with others. Their clouds are formless and hazy, only slightly thinner than a Fog’s.
1 PSP
Cirrus
The rank most think of when they imagine Pegasi, Cirruses are high-energy go-getters who often struggle to stand still. They want to be doing things, seeing places, meeting people, and woe betide the bondmate who tries to hold them back! A Cirrus’ clouds are easy to miss; they’re thin and wispy, usually dissipating before they touch the ground.
