singular Gearhog
plural Gearhogs
group a sounder of Gearhogs
young a hoglet
You know that saying, “when pigs fly?” Well, apparently it was a very popular phrase on Planet because after so many years and years and years of hearing it, the PIF got tired of it and suddenly, Gearhogs appeared. They truly look like permanent piglets with wings, never getting larger than the size of a house cat, and never smaller than a hedgehog. Their fur contains the usual colors of normal pigs, mostly pink with some brown, black, or white thrown in. Their wings vary and are dependent upon rank, and most are detachable and able to be fixed and upgraded. They have two spots on their back where wings can be attached, called wing plates.
Gearhogs are inventors and experimenters, truly. You'll probably easily categorize then as steampunk. While their personalities vary greatly, how they build their wings is what determines their rank. They also like to accessorize with leather vests, goggles, watches amongst other things. Ailoa probably won't approve, but they do. Tearing them away from their current project will probably be difficult, depending upon the Gearhog in particular.
They are supremely intelligent, and mind speak perfectly. They also make pig noises if excited, frustrated or happy.
Mating
This is one of the few times that any 'Hog will be torn away from their work for any length of time. When a female is in heat, she will squeal and call to all suitors that wish to partake in her challenge. Here they will test out whom has the superior wings- which is why they take so much time in upgrading and fixing them. The flight may be long or short, depending on the female. The winner is usually the one with what the female considers to be the best wings, though sometimes she picks the one that has the most potential, etc.
Bonding
Hoglets are tiny and blind when born, and are kept guarded because of this. At around three weeks old is when they can see perfectly, and it's around this time that the mother will allow potential bonders to meet them. Conversations are usually the best way to go for these smart little 'Hogs, if you want to catch their attention.
Featherborn
This female only rank are the undisputed Queens. Featherborns are the envy of all 'Hogs, for they are the only ones born with their wings. The large feathery expanses can grow up to 3x their size. They come in white or black, sometimes a mix of the two. Featherborns may birth up to fifteen hoglets.
4 PSP
Clockwork
Strategical minds claim this rank as their own. Their wing plates come with a built-in timer, and work from there on their wings. Some people claim their wings look the "coolest", because of the clocks and gears that usually make their way in them. Males are more common, and the females are viewed as their Jr. Queens. They can birth up to 9 hoglets.

Steampowered
The wing plates on these Gearhogs' backs are equipped with a little steam engine, enough to use steam power to achieve flight. Their wings are usually crafted out of pipes or other materials that redirect the steam in different directions so they can maneuver in the sky. They are both genders, with the females producing 2 to 4 hoglets.

Scrapmetal
Their name describes them rather well; supremely crafty, Scrapmetal will gather bits and pieces of leftover metals in order to create their wings. They stick to zinc, copper and brass, though sometimes iron slips in. They have just a general motor in their wing plates to help them. These commons are also either gender, with the females chasing often and not bearing young.
1 PSP
Rawhide
Rawhides have an affinity for leather and skins as their wings of choice. Their wing plates lack any motor, so they use pulleys and other systems to make the wings move. These commons may be either gender, and the females chase often but don't bear young.

Contraptor
Featherborns aren't the only one born with wings; so aren't these fellas. These commons were born with stunted wings, that only grew to about 6 inches, give or take an inch. They are not able to sustain flight, so the Contraptors have to make contraptions- hence their name- in order to achieve flight. Their wings can be any shade of silver and gold. They are gender less and don't participate in chases, but they will usually tell you which gender they identify as.
