Singular: Mearkish
Plural: Mearkies
Young: Kitpoles
Group: A frenzy of Mearkies
Mearkies are an odd mixture of cat and aquatic creatures. Their ranks dictate their appearance, but for the most part, they have the basic body of a feline, with large lynx ears, water-resistant fur, webbed paws, and tails that sport scales instead of fur. Their fur sports patterns seen on any terran species of cat, whether large or house; their scaled tails seem to be a free for all when it comes to patterns, and colors are dictated by rank. Nobody quite knows where they originated from, and they claim to have been around for eons. Regardless, these creatures appear to be mostly harmless-with some individual exceptions of course, as their personalities wildly vary- and the locals have come to love them. Their diet consists of small animals, fish, crustaceans, and some even eat fruits and veggies, including seaweed and kelp.
They prove to be very useful in the volcanic/desert terrain, as they have the ability to procure water no matter where they are. They can draw water out of the ground and make puddles at their feet, or fill empty cups and bowls with water out of thin air. They also innately know where natural water sources are. Mearkies are as intelligent on average as humans, and are able to mindspeak. They also purr, meow, and some of the larger ones can even roar. They prefer to be in groups, as they can be skittish if alone. They are able to breathe underwater perfectly, as well as above. They do have to make sure they dip into water once a day, to keep their fur and scales properly hydrated.

Mating
Their mating practices are why they are called frenzies when in groups. Mearkies get startlingly unpredictable and violent during chases. Whomever starts the chase, male or female, is always in control. The others fight ferociously against each other trying to catch the one in the lead. It is not unusal for the ones participating to get injuries. Their chases can take place on land or in the water. The starter will pick the winner on whichever principle they desire, and will generally snatch them out of the group and find the nearest body of water to get some privacy.Bonding
Mearkish kitpoles are born near a water source to ensure they are properly hydrated. Their litters range in size from 8 to 30 kitpoles, and all females have the ability to reproduce. They are watched closely by their parents for the first 30 days, because some kitpoles just won't make it past that. After the 30 day mark, the parents will gather prospective bonds to a safe place, and allow them to interact on their own. No special gift or offering is need, though they will appreciate food. Mearkies have no naming conventions. Ranks
