General Info:
Singular: Gheist
Plural: Gheists
Group: A Haunting of Gheists
A Gheist is an intangible force, a genderless creature of living light that only takes a clear form when possessing an inanimate host. They are unable to possess anything with a life force of it's own, and they find the concept of possessing objects that are too closely bound to a living creature (such as a hermit crab's shell or a cybernetic limb) to be utterly distasteful. What object a Gheist chooses to possess depends entirely on the individual tastes of the Gheist in question, though each rank is drawn to different properties in the object they choose.
Once inhabited, the item possessed by a Gheist becomes indestructible and perfectly preserved for the remainder of the Gheist's lifespan, even if the object in question would normally decay or degrade- a lit candle will never burn down or extinguish, a hamburger will never rot or grow mold, a glass globe will not shatter. If a Gheist's host does manage to be destroyed, it is theoretically possible for them to take a new one, but this can be very difficult, and a Gheist that is without a host for too long will discorporate and fade away.

A Gheist has full control of its host, and can make it walk, communicate, or even fly if necessary- and if manipulation of objects around them is required, and their host is insufficiently flexible to manipulate them (for example, if it lacks hands altogether), the Gheist can use a low-level telekinesis to handle things.
Objects possessed by Gheists are almost entirely indistinguishable from normal inanimate objects, save for a faint glow when the Gheist is active or excited. Attempting to use a Gheist's host as an object, however, will generally result in a furious Shiny, as most Gheists find being treated as a mere item to be insulting and belittling. This is not universal, of course, and some Gheists (particularly Rauls) don't mind being helpful, but it is never safe to assume.
Gheists are quite intelligent, and able to communicate in clear (albeit soft) mindspeak voices.
Mating Info:
On nights where no moon shines in the sky, Gheists gather to breed. The act is a dangerous one for many of them, for they leave their hosts behind, flashing through the dark sky in their pure, luminescent forms... and leaving their hosts vulnerable without them. They fill the night with flares and bursts of intense shine, competing with one another and complimenting the others' displays, culminating in one lucky Gheist returning to its host carrying the tiny sparks within it that will develop into their own entities.
Bonding Info:
The "mother" Gheist will gather a pile of suitably variable objects, generally ones that are approximately the size or shape of an egg (though any random objects will do at the end of the day). There will always be more 'eggs' than Spooks (as infant Gheists tend to be called), as the "mother" wants to provide plenty of variation so that the picky infants are comfortable while waiting to choose a host. This gives the nest site the appearance of a junk heap in the middle of a dance club, as the bright lights of the Spooks flicker back and forth between different objects.
People hoping to bond are encouraged to bring a variety of interesting items that might prove enticing to the young Gheists. The youngsters are likely to hop in and out of various potential hosts (as well as the nest of "eggs"), trying different things on for size, before deciding on an object to stick with and bonding to the person who provides it.
Ranks:
Vokaya
That Which Is Forgotten
Shyer than most of their brethren, but with a warmth that many lack, Vokaya are drawn to hosts that are likely to go unnoticed by others. In particular, they find an item most appealing if it has been forgotten- whether lost to the world, or buried, or simply cast aside. So long as others pay it little heed (and thus let them go unnoticed as well), it can suffice... a fact which can make them tricky to bond to at the best of times. Vokaya glow in white and gold.
Examples: A lost doll, a fossil, a rock in the mud, an old painting
